Quartzite
Quartzite is a hard, natural stone available in a range of neutral colors. Durability and heat-resistance make it ideal for high traffic areas, such as kitchens. This stone is often mistaken for marble due to its unique, natural patterns mimicking the look. Quartz and quartzite are two distinct materials: quartz is man made and quartzite is naturally occurring.
Advantages
Quartzite is naturally strong and durable with heat-resistant qualities. It is also resistant to UV rays and weathering, making it suitable for outdoor use. This stone also requires less maintenance than a material like marble.
Disadvantages
Unlike other natural stones, quartzite countertops have a smaller size limitation and oversized countertops require a seam. Quartzite also has fewer color options than its quartz counterpart, quartzite most often comes in neutral colors, but can come in blue, green, or pink depending on the minerals present.
Maintenance
Quartzite countertops require an initial seal following installation, and a yearly sealing is recommended for continued maintenance. Similar to other natural stones, spills should be cleaned immediately to prevent staining or water damage.
